ARK is a new type of Layer 2 protocol with the UX of E-Cash but non-custodial. When it was announced first in 2023 it was clear that it would require a soft fork like CTV to even work though. Now 2 years later it's here live on Bitcoin mainnet, without the need for a new soft fork at all.

And with the interoperability with Lightning it will create some interesting wallets and new use cases.

With AIs creating their models of the world primarily by reading text online, there's never been a more critical time to write than it is today.

This is an idea I've heard in a recent interview with Gwern and it's been reverberating in me ever since. Think about anything you care about, anything that's good or bad, anything of value to you. If it doesn't exist online, it basically doesn't exist at all for the AIs. That also means that your writings might be part of the training data of future AIs. By publishing your thoughts, you can become a tiny part of latent space tilting the self-reflection of the world in a direction you want to.

The “China was ripping us off” is such a gaslight

US policymakers intentionally designed a system where we could get cheap stuff and labor from China to reduce inflation and costs of living here in America

The CCP has happy to play its part but this was intentional

We aren’t a victim here, we got to buy unlimited stuff with debt issuance with China as the factory with lower wages that we could possibly have here

Take China away and we have crazy inflation after the Great Financial Crisis

Today the system is wobbling, and needs some kind of reset, but don’t let them fool you into thinking we were getting “ripped off”

GM.

Chapter 13 of Broken Money is called "Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown".

It focuses on the US trade deficit and why it arises structurally. In short, since the USD is the global reserve currency (for reserve assets, international contracts, FX trading pairs, and cross-border funding), there is tremendous automatic demand for USD in the world compared to other fiat currencies.

To supply the world with that ever-growing need for USD to service all sorts of needs, the United States runs structural trade deficits with the rest of the world. That's how the USD spills out to the rest of the world for them to use. And the mechanism for that is that the overvalued USD boosts Americans' import power, reduces Americans' low-margin export competiveness, and basically forces open that trade deficit.

That trade deficit is the cost of

Claudia Ortiz: A Voice of Opposition in Bukele’s El Salvador 🇸🇻

Claudia Ortiz, one of El Salvador’s few opposition voices, speaks on politics, civil rights, and about the Bitcoin Ley.

This interview's goal was simply to give space to the opposition, not to spark a debate.
For an objective analysis of her views and the topics discussed, I invite you to watch the documentary I produced (link in comments).

I've spent my adult life thinking about defending digital privacy.
el

Yet until a few years ago, financial freedom & privacy was barely on my radar.

This would have probably continued but for a handful of good humans that took the time to talk me through things.

Thanks to thinking they kicked off for me, I now think that individual access to aspects of financial freedom & privacy are necessary to a healthy society.

Why did it take so long? Well, there was a failure of adversarial imagination on my part.

And partly because if you aren't actively asking hard questions, this state of affairs will be hidden from you.

The financial system & how it is taught is set up to hide structural privacy violations & disempowerment.

I'm pretty sure my ignorance was closer to

Most folks don't love security theater & everyone has had a bad time at a screening checkpoint.

So, let's think for a second about hypothetical private-#TSA companies.

I'd expect them to gravitate towards AI-assigned individual risk ratings to minimize the cost of hiring & training people to interact with travelers.

To create ratings, I'd expect them to demand & consolidate invasive pools of our biometrics, web browsing, commenting, purchasing, movements & private lives.

Just don't call it a "social credit score"

You can bet they'll pivot to trying to monetize their data.

2026: We're a terminal security company
2029: We're a person rating company

Would these ratings make their way into other parts of our lives & things we want to visit?

And who exactly would stand up for us when the ratings

🚀 Today we’re supporting @Andreas Griffin
from Bitcoin-Safe.Org with 1,000,000 satoshis for his work on Bitcoin Safe – a beginner-friendly multisig wallet for Mac, Windows, Linux, or anywhere Python runs. Why this matters 🧵👇

🔧 Development of Specter Desktop is no longer a priority at Swan. A vital open-source wallet has essentially become abandonware – leaving a painful gap in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

💡 Andreas, a former Specter developer himself, recognized this gap – and with Bitcoin Safe created a brand-new solution that already goes beyond what Specter offered.

🔒 What makes Bitcoin Safe special:
An open-source wallet focused on multisig and hardware wallet integration. It combines the strengths of Electrum, Specter, and @mempool – with Nostr functionality added in.

🧙 The beginner-friendly multisig wizard makes secure Bitcoin self-custody accessible – even for non-technical users.

dave will enable anonymized pay-per-query via lightning+NWC for any ai backend (claude, deepseek, openai) or free with your own ollama instance. This can happen automagically on each query thanks to NWC. Charge dave to keep him alive!

You setup your wallet once in the notedeck nostr browser. use it for zapping in the columns app, or ppq in the dave app.

This will work on windows, macos, linux, and android. Not sure about iOS/iPadOS since apple does not let us do that there.

lightning+nwc is the pay per query future of ai and other services, it just makes too much sense.

Whenever I see statists like the ECB get upset about Bitcoin, or when I see more brazen regimes try and actually implement an all-out ban or crazy tax scheme, I turn to my favorite bit of writing anywhere on Bitcoin and remind myself that a ban is the Berlin Wall and that “fragments of any ban will one day become souvenirs of the folly”

Bitcoin is Ariadne by @allen

“Bitcoin is often framed as “competing” with fiat currency. This is true in a sense but I fear there is a rhetorical danger of invoking the wrong kind of “competition”. It is not a fight, for example. There is no conflict. Bitcoin is not trying to damage or sabotage its opponents, because it isn’t trying anything and it knows no opponents. It has no awareness whatsoever of who might oppose it or why. It is simply an

Trump's monetary policy seems to be:

1) Devalue the dollar (to become more competitive with manufacturing)

2) Force other countries to still use it (through a <checks notes> 100% tariff on countries who try to use other currencies)

Post-fiat historians will look back at these times with a lot of wonder and fascination

I had the honor to interview María Corina Machado, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, about how fiat money was weaponized against the Venezuelan people by the Chávez and Maduro regimes

She says Bitcoin is a "lifeline" and "vital means of resistance" and said that a future democratic Venezuelan government will use Bitcoin to rebuild the national reserves that the Chávistas stole and put Venezuela back on a path to peace and prosperity

I've put out a lot of content in the past few years but I think this is the most important thing I've done -- the implications are vast considering a) Venezuela is one of the world's largest energy exporters with some of the world's largest oil reserves and b) María Corina Machado is not some rogue leader or dictator but a US ally

I hope you can watch 🇻🇪

In the near future there will be fantasy football apps entirely built on nostr, looking forward to that

P.S. before you jest, remember that close to 70 million (!) Americans play fantasy sports, all together sending billions of small transactions every year

I would strongly recommend this book

It hasn't gotten a lot of attention but is definitely worth it

The thesis is simple

Just as the dollar moved from being based on gold to being based on oil (the petrodollar), it is today in the process of moving to a new base of Bitcoin, with the help of stablecoins

But thankfully the book doesn't end there with that dark outcome

It heavily implies that through proper engineering and layering and technologies like ecash, we can defeat the fiat system

Can Nostr Make Twitter's Dreams Come True?

Twitter's founder says Nostr is “100 percent what we wanted”—an open, ownerless network

Alex Gladstein | 8.13.2024

Virtually everyone agrees that social media is broken. On Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok, people fear out-of-control algorithms, fake news, state actor censorship, and propaganda. Google and Meta collect vast troves of personal information on their users and receive hundreds of thousands of requests every year from governments around the world to access that data. YouTube has become arguably "the most powerful media platform in the history of humanity," yet its algorithm is an

Here's my full main-stage keynote from Nashville

It was spread across two days, so that's why I change halfway through 😂

51 minutes but I worked hard to carefully consider each minute

The talk is packed with lessons and examples that I have learned and seen across my entire career of people using Bitcoin to change the world in the most unlikely of places

I walk through how Bitcoin is a revolution for commerce, freedom, and electric power, citing dozens of examples in each case

This one is for every single person who has ever said Bitcoin is useless, just as much is as it's for every person who is curious about Bitcoin and wants to know more

Most people know that Bitcoin is a great savings technology, which is of course its primary use case, but I

Iconic talk by Jaron Lanier

Given in 2018, but you watch it and you realize he could be talking about the current moment and opportunity with nostr

“We cannot have a society in which if two people wish to communicate the only way that can happen is if it’s financed by a third person who wishes to manipulate them”

Amen

“The alternative is to turn back the clock with great difficulty and remake that decision. Remaking it would mean two things. It would mean many people would actually pay for these things. You’d pay for search. You’d pay for social networking. How would you pay? Maybe with a subscription fee. Maybe with micropayments... If some of you are recoiling and saying: oh my god I would never pay for these things, how could you ever get anyone to pay? Well, companies like

Then if he wants to spend on a game, he can request a purchase through the apple App Store, i get a notification first from apple, then i get a notification from Strike saying that he zapped me $5 to cover the cost of the purchase. Someone I love wrote to me with a Kickstarter project, asking me to back it

I wanted to, but then was hit with the permission wall: sign up, create an account, give us all your information, credit card info, all this stuff

The current web is built in an infuriating way where you can only support those you like through permissioned walls built by rent-seekers posing as "connectors"

So, I didn't proceed, and didn't back them, which sucks

I hope they will join us on Nostr soon so I can back them effortlessly with sound money and no-rent seeking

I recently learned that legislation has been drafted on Capitol Hill to classify *not re-using Bitcoin addresses* as "mixing"

There are also efforts to force "unhosted wallet providers" to collect user info for taxes

As well as to give power to Treasury to sanction any address (even Americans)

And a whole lot more bad stuff

IMO Coin Center does vital work to fight this and to protect privacy tech

They are a compact team and do a lot with the resources they have

They sue the OFAC and Treasury

They consider the Bank Secrecy Act unconstitutional and act accordingly

I just spent some time with their leadership team, asking questions, and came away impressed, I would strongly suggest a donation today

HRF is excited to announce the CISA Research Fellowship 🎉

Cross-Input Signature Aggregation (CISA) is a proposed upgrade to Bitcoin that could potentially enhance privacy and provide cost-savings for transactions

HRF is sponsoring a four-month research fellowship to help analyze the state and future of CISA

The product of the fellowship will be an industry paper that seeks to answer the following questions:

1) How could CISA improve Bitcoin privacy?
2) Exactly how much cost-savings could CISA provide across different types of transactions? This will include a comparison of full versus half aggregate implementations.
3) How meaningful might these cost savings be to different industry participants? Given historical precedent, could these cost savings make Taproot the default script type, as Native Segwit is today?
4) Could CISA, if adopted widely, reduce the effectiveness of chain analysis?
5) Could

eCash is useful for many things. First of all, the token is the money. Which means you can send money offline, for example, just by sharing a string or QR code (or tapping phones via NFC / Bluetooth / whatever). FediMint has this feature, and it's very useful in certain situations. It's also very private.

You can also use eCash tokens as authentication strings, e.g. to retrieve data from an API or DVM. You can think of it as accessing something and instead of putting a regular password you put an eCash string into the "password" field, so you immediately and directly pay for the request. No account needed. #SovEng people are exploring this as we speak.
