HRF’s involvement brings:
🌍 International visibility
🎤 Elevated voices
🔥 Momentum that travels far beyond the room
With @evento.so, this gathering didn’t require gatekeepers—just:

I also think that Nostr is more about the identity layer and ability to find peers or other communities via relay rendezvous points, at which point you can use whatever transport layer you want.
But we'll see... Probably the biggest open question in my mind. Wdyt?

It would be nice if there was a business model for nodes and node competition at the protocol level.
As it is, I wonder if nostr can scale.

The 1st Bitcoin price was $1 = 1,309 BTC on New Liberty Standard exchange.
5 October 2009
The price was calculated by dividing $1.00 by the average amount of electricity required to run a computer with high CPU for a year.

And the 1st EVER transaction on this platform was done by legendary super OG bitcoin dev @Martti Malmi aka Sirius.

This is a big release. It includes a whole new setup UI and improvements in distributed key generation. This means that federation setups are much more robust and rarely fail now.
It also includes LNURL support and turns on our new Lightning protocol (LNv2) on by default in new federations.
The progress on iroh has been super encouraging, but iroh is still early potentially has protocol breaking changes coming. We are holding off on recommending mainnet deployments using iroh until we're confident that it is stable. In the meantime, there's a Mutinynet Start9 package available for side-loading.
We are hoping iroh will be stable by our v0.8.0 release, at which point mainnet Start9 and Umbrel packages will be made available for deploying federations on node boxes!

Someone zapped me 200 sats on X by commenting with a Cashu token locked to my nostr public key (which is my most recognizable cryptographic public identity).
It took me two button presses to receive it instantly. Fucking love Cashu.

we defy borders, hierarchies, and middlemen.
code is our passport. access is our right.
permissionless technologies defend freedoms.
they scale trust without institutions.
they enable action without approval.
no one asks to speak.
no one begs to build.
no one waits to change.
we build systems that can't be shut down.
we create tools that serve all, not the few.
we write code that liberates, not controls.
this is not just infrastructure.
it’s a revolution—
silent, sovereign, unstoppable.
we don’t ask.
we deploy.

Replying to @npub1qny3t
Hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy protesters have taken to the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, in support of jailed mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is seen as a rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Meet Cashu Witness.
Imagine @calle 👁️⚡👁️ and @heidE want to do a deal, but they don't trust each other. They do, however, both trust me.
Calle can lock his payment token to all three of us, requiring 2-of-3 signatures to redeem... and specify a time limit for performance.

The token can be sent up front, and all parties can see the lock using Cashu Witness.
If the deal goes through, I can witness the token and send it on to HeidE, who can then sign and swap it for an unlocked token she can spend (again using Cashu Witness).
If the deal falls through, I witness the token and send it back to Calle to cash in.
if I get hit by a bus or the deal isn't done in time, Calle can cash in the token when the the token lock expires.

This is an idea I've heard in a recent interview with Gwern and it's been reverberating in me ever since. Think about anything you care about, anything that's good or bad, anything of value to you. If it doesn't exist online, it basically doesn't exist at all for the AIs. That also means that your writings might be part of the training data of future AIs. By publishing your thoughts, you can become a tiny part of latent space tilting the self-reflection of the world in a direction you want to.

US policymakers intentionally designed a system where we could get cheap stuff and labor from China to reduce inflation and costs of living here in America
The CCP has happy to play its part but this was intentional
We aren’t a victim here, we got to buy unlimited stuff with debt issuance with China as the factory with lower wages that we could possibly have here
Take China away and we have crazy inflation after the Great Financial Crisis
Today the system is wobbling, and needs some kind of reset, but don’t let them fool you into thinking we were getting “ripped off”

Chapter 13 of Broken Money is called "Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown".
It focuses on the US trade deficit and why it arises structurally. In short, since the USD is the global reserve currency (for reserve assets, international contracts, FX trading pairs, and cross-border funding), there is tremendous automatic demand for USD in the world compared to other fiat currencies.
To supply the world with that ever-growing need for USD to service all sorts of needs, the United States runs structural trade deficits with the rest of the world. That's how the USD spills out to the rest of the world for them to use. And the mechanism for that is that the overvalued USD boosts Americans' import power, reduces Americans' low-margin export competiveness, and basically forces open that trade deficit.
That trade deficit is the cost of

Claudia Ortiz, one of El Salvador’s few opposition voices, speaks on politics, civil rights, and about the Bitcoin Ley.
This interview's goal was simply to give space to the opposition, not to spark a debate.
For an objective analysis of her views and the topics discussed, I invite you to watch the documentary I produced (link in comments).

Yet until a few years ago, financial freedom & privacy was barely on my radar.
This would have probably continued but for a handful of good humans that took the time to talk me through things.
Thanks to thinking they kicked off for me, I now think that individual access to aspects of financial freedom & privacy are necessary to a healthy society.
Why did it take so long? Well, there was a failure of adversarial imagination on my part.
And partly because if you aren't actively asking hard questions, this state of affairs will be hidden from you.
The financial system & how it is taught is set up to hide structural privacy violations & disempowerment.
I'm pretty sure my ignorance was closer to

So, let's think for a second about hypothetical private-#TSA companies.
I'd expect them to gravitate towards AI-assigned individual risk ratings to minimize the cost of hiring & training people to interact with travelers.
To create ratings, I'd expect them to demand & consolidate invasive pools of our biometrics, web browsing, commenting, purchasing, movements & private lives.
Just don't call it a "social credit score"
You can bet they'll pivot to trying to monetize their data.
2026: We're a terminal security company
2029: We're a person rating company
Would these ratings make their way into other parts of our lives & things we want to visit?
And who exactly would stand up for us when the ratings

from Bitcoin-Safe.Org with 1,000,000 satoshis for his work on Bitcoin Safe – a beginner-friendly multisig wallet for Mac, Windows, Linux, or anywhere Python runs. Why this matters 🧵👇
🔧 Development of Specter Desktop is no longer a priority at Swan. A vital open-source wallet has essentially become abandonware – leaving a painful gap in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
💡 Andreas, a former Specter developer himself, recognized this gap – and with Bitcoin Safe created a brand-new solution that already goes beyond what Specter offered.
🔒 What makes Bitcoin Safe special:
An open-source wallet focused on multisig and hardware wallet integration. It combines the strengths of Electrum, Specter, and @mempool – with Nostr functionality added in.
🧙 The beginner-friendly multisig wizard makes secure Bitcoin self-custody accessible – even for non-technical users.

Bitcoin is Ariadne by @allen
“Bitcoin is often framed as “competing” with fiat currency. This is true in a sense but I fear there is a rhetorical danger of invoking the wrong kind of “competition”. It is not a fight, for example. There is no conflict. Bitcoin is not trying to damage or sabotage its opponents, because it isn’t trying anything and it knows no opponents. It has no awareness whatsoever of who might oppose it or why. It is simply an

She says Bitcoin is a "lifeline" and "vital means of resistance" and said that a future democratic Venezuelan government will use Bitcoin to rebuild the national reserves that the Chávistas stole and put Venezuela back on a path to peace and prosperity
I've put out a lot of content in the past few years but I think this is the most important thing I've done -- the implications are vast considering a) Venezuela is one of the world's largest energy exporters with some of the world's largest oil reserves and b) María Corina Machado is not some rogue leader or dictator but a US ally

Can Nostr Make Twitter's Dreams Come True?
Twitter's founder says Nostr is “100 percent what we wanted”—an open, ownerless network
Alex Gladstein | 8.13.2024
Virtually everyone agrees that social media is broken. On Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok, people fear out-of-control algorithms, fake news, state actor censorship, and propaganda. Google and Meta collect vast troves of personal information on their users and receive hundreds of thousands of requests every year from governments around the world to access that data. YouTube has become arguably "the most powerful media platform in the history of humanity," yet its algorithm is an

This one is for every single person who has ever said Bitcoin is useless, just as much is as it's for every person who is curious about Bitcoin and wants to know more
Most people know that Bitcoin is a great savings technology, which is of course its primary use case, but I

You’d pay for search. You’d pay for social networking. How would you pay? Maybe with a subscription fee. Maybe with micropayments... Then if he wants to spend on a game, he can request a purchase through the apple App Store, i get a notification first from apple, then i get a notification from Strike saying that he zapped me $5 to cover the cost of the purchase. As well as to give power to Treasury to sanction any address (even Americans)
And a whole lot more bad stuff
IMO Coin Center does vital work to fight this and to protect privacy tech
They are a compact team and do a lot with the resources they have
They sue the OFAC and Treasury
They consider the Bank Secrecy Act unconstitutional and act accordingly
I just spent some time with their leadership team, asking questions, and came away impressed, I would strongly suggest a donation today

You can also use eCash tokens as authentication strings, e.g. to retrieve data from an API or DVM. You can think of it as accessing something and instead of putting a regular password you put an eCash string into the "password" field, so you immediately and directly pay for the request. No account needed. #SovEng people are exploring this as we speak.
