We are finishing the kitchen coop project for one Chama. Today we are going to a farm to buy chickens for the coop. We've been to two farms but we haven't found the chicken we are looking for.
We just made a stop to eat and rest for a bit before going to the third farm.

Stoked!! The Surfer Kids has its first female Surf Coach!
Linomtha (14) has been consistently attending the daily program for 7 years. She joined when she was only 7!
She was recently appointed as junior coach, along with 6 young men. All of whom have been surfing with us for several years and have learnt advanced surf skills.
Youngsters can choose to opt in as junior coaches from age 14 onwards, and can progress to senior coaching positions when they turn 18. Linomtha is the first girl to break through that threshold and be appointed as a junior coach.
Recruiting (and retaining) girls has been challenging, for various reasons. But hopefully, with an inspiring role model to look up to, more girls will join!
And, off course, as with our entire team, Linomtha will now earn her Junior Coaching salary paid entirely in sats!

Yesterday we received preliminary approval to go ahead with our plans to build a new Ekasi Support Center, to help our the community through the coming adoption phase of hyper bitcoinization.
The decision was made during a local council meeting, almost a year after we submitted our original application. There's a long process that remains before building can start, but this is a major step forward.

As a thought experiment, imagine there was a base metal as scarce as gold but with the following properties:
- boring grey in colour
- not a good conductor of electricity
- not particularly strong, but not ductile or easily malleable either
- not useful for any practical or ornamental purpose
and one special, magical property:
- can be transported over a communications channel
If it somehow acquired any value at all for whatever reason, then anyone wanting to transfer wealth over a long distance could buy some, transmit it, and have the recipient sell it.
Maybe it could get an initial value circularly as you've suggested, by people foreseeing its potential usefulness for exchange. (I would definitely want some) Maybe collectors, any random reason could spark it.
I think the traditional qualifications for money were written

New people don’t get much engagement because established users don’t follow new people so they leave. They feel like they are talking into the void (because they do). Even commenting on notes doesn’t get you that many followers.
This is why it’s so critical for Nostr to grow or it may very well die. Without new people, the number of users will shrink over time. You need relatively new folks to engage with other relatively new folks because they’re more likely to follow each other and stick around.

We have our FIRST EVER provincial champion!!!
Avethandwa just won gold at the Surfing South Africa Grommet Games in Muizenberg, Cape Town!!!
(This is in addition to the 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal collected by The Surfer Kids at this event!)
We started The Surfer Kids in 2010, with nothing. Literally nothing. If you told me then, that it'd take this long to get here, I wouldn't have believed you.
But I don't know how to stop, so I didn't. That's the one thing I'm really good at. Not quitting 😂 And so, here we are. Almost 15 years later.
I'm not getting too excited, however. Because this is just a small step in the bigger scheme of things.
We're going to get a gold medal at South African Championships. And then, at a World Surf

Kids' rewards are back!
February was The Surfer Kids first full month of operations in 2025, and all children who attended at least 80% of the sessions earned their monthly reward in sats!
This is also the first time we're using our new cards, in combination with our own self-hosted @BTCPay Server instance!
Thanks to @openoms and @El Flaco for helping us set it up!
A brief overview of The Surfer Kids' program stats for February:
Total surf sessions: 17
Total active recruits: 64
Average attendance / day: 30 children
Average attendance / child: 8 sessions (49%)

At the @BitcoinEkasi Center, we operate a thrift shop where residents can purchase clothing for a small amount of satoshis while being introduced to @Fedi.
@Fedi not only enables Bitcoin payments but also features a built-in chat group, making it easier for us to stay connected with the community.
This allows us to educate, support, and engage with them on their Bitcoin journey in a seamless and interactive way.

While competitive success is not The Surfer Kids' primary objective, we do want to give those kids who are hungry for it the best chance at success.
But there aren't enough local surf comps for the kids, and so, when they're at the big events they struggle with nerves. They're not used to dealing with the pressures of competition.
To fix this, we're launching our own little surf series and inviting all members of the local Eden surfing federation to come and compete.
First event is this weekend.

Almost daily I am purchasing goods at any of over 2,000 PicknPay stores, coffee at First Light Coffee in Jeffreysbay and petrol at TotalEnergies with WiCode vouchers from @bitrefill in #SouthAfrica
Today I tested the new feature in @AQUA Wallet which allows you to directly pay the QR code from PicknPay. It worked! Thanks to the @Breez ⚡️ SDK that enables Lightning payments via swaps from @Liquid Network

You’ll find many places accepting BTC on @btcmap you can visit @BitcoinEkasi @bitcoinloxion @bitcoinwitsand purchase food, clothes, electricity and pay your municipal bills at any PicknPay.
I‘m trying to visit as many places I can to incentivize the early adopter merchants to stick to accepting it. Some waiters are intimidated other cashiers seem to be totally used to it.

Attended a community meeting yesterday and I was impressed (after multiple translations 😂 from Spanish to English) with how involved the locals are.

An interesting new add-on to this year's road-trip (following Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town) was a visit to two primary schools, to see what they're doing with Bitcoin Adoption.
One of those two schools had their entire first rugby team kitted out in a brand-new "STUDY BITCOIN" kit!
As things stand now, Volschenk Primary School will attend the Oakdale and Willie Le Roux Rugby Events, lining up with their new kit, facing thousands of spectators.
All-in-all, in 2025, they will play more than 40 matches against neighboring schools, and some of their opposition teams will be sponsored by large South African banks. It's not uncommon to see Absa, FNB and Standard Bank on the uniforms of schools' sports' teams.
I will definitely attend at least one of those games to see the crowd's response.

I met with yet another blockchain, web3, crypto enthusiast yesterday... he works for a software development company that does full stack blockchain development, blah, blah, blah...
But respect, the dude was curious about Ekasi, and made the effort to come to visit, which is awesome!

Bongani is a 15-year-old learner in Gr. 10 at Indwe Secondary School in Mossel Bay.
He's been with The Surfe Kids for several years, but when we opened Ekasi Center in 2022, he gravitated towards learning more about #Bitcoin
Everyday, after school, Monday to Friday, he works as a teacher's assistant with our full-time teacher, @Sassa, at Ekasi Center, helping her run daily Bitcoin Diploma classes, as part of the My First Bitcoin network.
Bongani started working his way through 'The Bitcoin Standard' in Oct 2023 and finished it this week, with the help of a volunteer tutor, @jasonb. In Bongani's own words, "this was the longest book he's ever read", and he had to learn a lot of new vocabulary, which impressed his tutor.

Having spent a fair bit of time traveling, this has developed into a curious annoyance these past two years.
People wanna have it both ways when it comes to not checking their luggage. And I don't understand why airlines allow this.
I get. If you travel light, no need to check a bag. I often do that.
But dragging two or three big suitcases around, and still pretending that you're a light traveler, wanting the benefit of not checking luggage... seriously, WTF?

Only some finishing touches remain. We're planning an opening ceremony for mid-July.
If you can't make it, don't stress, the park will always be open to anyone with a Nostr npub. For everyone else, the entry fee will be payable in Bitcoin only.

I used to listen to this stuff religiously when I was a teenager. Never really knew why. Not cognitively anyway. All I knew was, I was pissed off at something.
20 years later, I'm re-discovering it. But with a very different attitude. Back then, it made we wanna obliterate myself with drugs and alcohol.
Turns out it's dangerous to go down that path without a solution in mind.
However, with a possible solution, the same energy can be channeled to great effect.
Because this same stuff is the ultimate energizer to get out there and do something about all this shit.
I even listen to this with my kids, driving to school every morning. And they love it!
(Though I do filter the songs with seriously explicit language)

Among the many things I've learned thanks to Bitcoin is that, whatever the reasons may be, humans are incapable of learning things without first making costly mistakes.
I was on an international flight yesterday wearing my usual attire. #Bitcoin cap and t-shirt.
Two random individuals (two separate occasions) approached and asked exactly the same thing: "I see you're into #Bitcoin do you trade?"
It's the first time this has happened in over two years. Not surprising, considering the week we've had.
But significant because, here we go. Again. 2013, 2017, 2021 and now 2024.
Lots of people will lose lots of money because they're asking the wrong questions.
And likely only a small minority of them will learn from those mistakes.
We're at the very beginning of wherever this is going.

At the upcoming @Adopting Bitcoin Cape Town Conference, we will consider a proposal and (potentially) help fund the establishment of a new #Bitcoin Circular Economy project in South Africa.
Something much like Bitcoin Beach and our own project, Bitcoin Ekasi.
However, it'll be different in that #Bitcoin AND #Nostr will serve as its foundational cornerstones.
If succesfull, the announcement will be made at the conference and soon after, on here.

I'm interacting with local government, more and more, thanks to the success of this project.
Had a meeting with the local mayor yesterday, which is the highest office of local government. And yes, we discussed #Bitcoin
Talking to him, I realised that while it isn't ideal, it's not that much of a problem.
The problem is not local government making decisions for a town of 100k people, with whom they can realistically have a real relationship.
The real problem is national government making decisions for 60 million people. With whom there's no hope in hell to ever have a real relationship.
And that's not even mentioning supranational entities. That's just pure insanity.
