Paywall? Fine, sure. Go have fun with that. @GitCitadel is betting that the game theory of scientific publishing on nostr will beat that. Or at the very least, encourage more open, crowd-sourced, citizen science.
What happens when the masses, already distrusting of major scientific research end up writing their own reproducable research, with the option for their readers funding research? You have one distributed interlinked repository, massively searchable (as nostr is through just just text events) at the fine grained paragraph/section level, distributed across multiple sources. Papers completely introspectable, with direct links to other nostr papers, as you can link to and broadcast events across relays. Readable like any other book/publication, but navigable like an Obsidian personal knowledge base, with comments, forks, highlights.
And then you have the other repository. Pdfs and epubs locked behind paywalls, isolated as monolithic documents, without any commentary.

Still very much a demo, but now here it is. AI + Nostr:
1) Text search on the title + author of a note
2) Semantic search on content
Example: "The cat chased the mouse" is semantically similar to "Felines hunt their prey at night" even though they don't have any words in common.
What this means is that you don't need an exact match of the text, you just need to type in words you think are related and it will retrieve the K closest events that are "semantically similar"

Tested Grok 3, its “deepSearch” & “think” mode with premium+.
First thought: they’re clearly manipulating the benchmarks. It’s not the best model by any stretch, especially in math & code. That much I can say for sure, so benchmarks in those areas don’t make much sense.
XAI’s deep search is nowhere close to OpenAI’s deep research. In fact, I don’t think they’re even in the same category. XAI’s deep search is more like Perplexity’s but slightly better.
That said, Grok 3 isn’t a bad model. It’s actually better than I expected—way better than Grok 2, but there’s nothing extraordinary about it. They also didn’t open-source it, so it doesn’t add anything meaningful to the ecosystem.
Bonus: If you’re someone who wants to play with cutting-edge AI models & features, like models with chain-of-thought reasoning, grounded web search, Gemini 2 Pro, & the

One of my software projects is called noscrypt (or libnoscrypt). I make it to prevent you from rolling your own crypto :)
It's a C90 library with a high-level API for nostr cryptographic operations such as those in nip01,nip04(soon), and nip44.
- Built to be highly portable (with embedded platforms in mind)
- Stable ABI, and backward compatible API when possible
- Aggressive protections and input validation where possible (optional, on by default)
- Only depends on libc, libsecp256k1, and your choice of crypto backend (OpenSSL, MbedTLS, or bcrypt on Windows)
- Focuses on stability and correctness, performance when possible.
- Static or shared library
- Integrates well with CMake

today is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year which is mostly known for the lantern festival, which is nice family gathering enjoying savory Tang Yuans (湯圓) and lantern decorations are seen in many spots. However in the south of Taiwan (Tainan) there is a peculiar tradition called the Yanshui Beehive Festival (鹽水蜂炮) that happens on this day.
On the day of the lantern festival, people gather around a bunch of fireworks that shoot outward into the crowd. Get hit by a firework and you have good luck for the year. It's crazy and super dangerous
This is a tradition brought over to Taiwan in the 19th century by Ming Rebels/Pirates as a loyalty test and rite-of-passage, somehow this tradition became one of "hey, if i get hit by a lot of fireworks at the start of the year, i'll have good luck!".
Taiwanese are weird sometimes 🤣

"Chao kuai (Thai: เฉาก๊วย, grass cake) is a jelly which is made by boiling the aged and slightly oxidized stalks and leaves of Mesona chinensis, a type of mint, with potassium carbonate for several hours with a little starch and then cooling the liquid to a jelly-like consistency. Originally a Chinese dish, in Thailand it is normally eaten with ice and natural brown sugar. This photo was made at the Sunday Evening Walking Street market of Chiang Mai, Thailand."

We are glad to inform you, that we have gotten some of our formatting fixed and added some small features.
Here you can see, how we have added a horizontal scroll bar to verbatim quote fields. This doesn't completely solve the left-margin problem, on mobile, but it keeps the information from running off the page.
We have added the ability to view the version/edition on the index card, if it is available. If the author tag is not available, we complete the field with "unknown".
Here you can see two formatting changes:
1. The hyperlinks are now underlined.
2. We have begun implementing type-driven formatting. For "type" tag filled with the word "book" (our default), the first capital letter of every chapter is enlarged. For all other types (such as here, with type="research"),

I want to emphasize that we're building a product on Nostr because we believe in Nostr's mission of protecting freedom of speech. Thus, our product, #Alexadria focuses on the uniqueness of Nostr as such, and we are using its momentum to give back to the protocol.
Our core concept of open publications has already made its way into a NIP proposal, which others have begun to adopt. This will make Nostr a haven for independent writers, publishers, and scientists.
Our work on publications illustrated the need for a Nostr citation format, and the recently-proposed NIP-A4 addresses that, providing a means of citing physical and digital works, as well as LLM-generated content.
The Euler edition of Alexandria will utilize our in-development C++ SDK for Nostr, which we intend to support the needs of all clients developers, not just the needs of our project.

If I remember correctly they contacted me and I had a call with a guy from Twitter where he told me Bluesky's goals were to build a protocol for which Twitter could become a client in the future, to which I said Nostr was a perfect match, then he asked me if I would consider becoming the lead Bluesky person they would pick for leading the effort, and I said ok but asked if it would be acceptable if I just used Nostr as it was as "the Bluesky" without considering the other proposals and he didn't know what to say.

I just saw the perfect kiss on the beach. I can see this guy is good. It was not short, not too long, left them both wanting more.
Here I am creeping on people kissing, but they are right in front of me. But that's the trick. It's so well done that it's an art form.

The latest version of WoT Relay introduces a new .env variable called
`IGNORE_FOLLOWS_LIST`
You can input a comma delimited list of pubkeys who are too dumb to be trusted, and the relay will ignore their follows when building the web of trust graph. But since you still love them, they can still post to the relay.

I believe that paid relays could become much more appealing if they offered a dedicated website where users could log in to manage, edit, upload, download posts, content, and follower lists—all linked to their NIP. while still allowing users to keep full control over their content.
This would maintain the decentralization principles of nostr that everyone wants & needs. I suspect more people would be willing to pay for a relay.
This concept would resemble the functionality of the Citrine Relay app, which allows users to view and manage their posts in a database.
While Nostr is still in its early stages, I’m confident that relays will evolve in this direction.
In the meantime, I find the Citrine Relay app both fascinating and incredibly useful.

Primal clients read from the caching service and write directly to the user’s relays. We chose a set of tradeoffs based on what we are trying to accomplish: best UX possible. We’ve been very transparent about it from Day 1. See my blog post from March 13, 2023 - the day we launched Primal. I still think that caching services are not only great for UX, but also a legitimate way to help scale Nostr once we hit millions of users. They could even improve censorship resistance, since anyone can stand them up and create more copies of Nostr events.
Having said all that, the Primal stack is evolving and becoming more capable on the client as well. One can imagine peer-to-peer transfers between clients that have client-side databases, like Primal for Android. It supports NIP-50 search filters, and actually proxies the search query to Bluesky's centralized search endpoint, so I don't need to do anything special to make search work exactly the same as on Bluesky itself.
For example:

In defense of developer depression:
Reflecting on my journey in Bitcoin over the last decade, I've come to realize that I've achieved success where a lot of other developers have failed.
Ironically, one of the biggest issues I'm still dealing with is that I may have succeeded too much. As a developer, you must understand that unfortunately, most people you’ll end up working with will not want you to succeed. The majority will simply want you to code what is needed for their success… and then go away. Disappear.
The core problem for you is that creating anything great requires deep coding focus for extended periods. You also need to constantly iterate on the product while ensuring it gains traction. Many developers mistakenly believe they can do both.
The hard truth is that you shouldn’t be doing this. You shouldn’t have to

I'm going to be making some major changes to my nostr priorities moving into 2025, in three main areas:
Advancing Outbox/Inbox
- my bots and I are now only posting to a few small relays. That means if your client does not support outbox, you're not likely to see our posts anymore.
- I have disabled blastr on my haven relay (other users are still welcomed to use it of course)
- I am now only using clients that fetch relays correctly, current daily driver is Gossip
- heavy focus on improving UX for haven to get more users running it, including one click installation on umbrel/start9 and windows PCs.

- Many of us here have self selected for a chronological algorithm, but what about the 99% of users who try nostr and then leave? My theory

This is sort of a controversial take on this 11th of November.
I am grateful for the wars.
I would not be here today were the events of the wars not to have occurred. My wife and kids would not be here either. Heck, I wouldn't have met my wife.
My Great Grandfather on my mother's side fought in WWI for the allies and rose though the ranks to Colonel. He was awarded the Legion d'Honour Chevalier rank for documenting gravesites. I take immense pride and inspiration from his actions.
My other a Great Grandfather (a Jew) fought for the Germans.
In WWII, the German side of the family had to flea Germany (so much for honouring the debt he paid in WWI) and moved to NYC with his whole family, escaping on one of the last ships out. Meanwhile
I am grateful for the wars.

I'm not trying to take sides, though I have my preferences. I've always been a fan of startups, and money shapes the landscape. Who, how much, structures, valuations: they drive decisions both short and long term. Knowing where the next round will come from is always on your mind.
Bluesky has raised more than twice what has been attributed to nostr. They also benefit from friendly publicity. These things make certain things very easy for them.
They also have traditional business structures, and relationships with VC. These constrain what they are able to do. It currently appears that anything with Bitcoin is off the table. In periods of crisis, I expect even more control to be exerted.

In the meantime I also started this other library that can serve as a companion to nostr-tools for more high-level operations: https://jsr.io/@nostr/gadgets/doc
For now it does a reasonably good job at fetching profile metadata and replaceable lists efficiently for pubkeys, eventually I want to make it do outbox-model style fetching of posts and also have custom relay selection and WoT handling for each kind of content that can have its own Nostr "silo", like marketplaces, wiki articles, long-form articles, livestreams, recipes, music, podcasts and whatnot following the vision of.

I for one am not dismissive. If I post an innocent frog meme and somebody at the website where it is stored at (not mine) changes it to a swastika, that reflects badly on me and most nostr users will have no idea that I didn't post a swastika... thinking about how events are digitally signed it sure seems like I did!
Previously some people argued for storing binary objects inside of events. I argued against due to performance reasons and CSAM legal reasons, not signature reasons. I like the imeta 'x' field a lot and I think all the clients should both produce imeta tags with 'x' and also verify them.
My head wasn't even in this space a few weeks back and gossip is playing "catch up" on this. It does neither thing currently (on master) but I just got it verifying on unstable,

Whenever I feel stressed about a performance I always remind myself I’m doing something “I want to do”. I’m stressed because “I care”. I try to put my energy back into the concept of enjoying what I do. Actually enjoying the moment. Competing. Being on camera. Having a crowd. Enjoying the stage. I have 260.7k followers on Twitter grown organically over the course of 4 years. I prefer Nostr because there are humans here having real conversations.
I don’t desire to be popular amongst bots, “influencers” and people that I don’t respect. I’d rather be a pleb amongst humans and people that I respect. Nostr will change the world.

I really don't get the people that complain that they don't get followers on Nostr because there is no algorithm.
I never got any followers in any of these platforms with algorithms (even though I used them actively for years), except when by some unexplicable hit of luck some people started using @lntxbot on Telegram and by word-of-mouth it got to Alex Bosworth and he mentioned it on tweet and then my follower count slowly grew from 50 to like 5000 over a 3-year period.
Is there a magic trick that allows you to go from 0 to 100000 by gaming the algorithm these days and then scam your followers a high-ticket course about how to get followers and become a millionaire? Or what are these people talking about? Why do they even want followers in the first place?

I'm amazed that digital networks have been around for 65 years, the internet for 35 years, and we still don't have words to talk about networks.
There's only a weak consensus about the meaning of network topologies like "federated", "decentralized", "distributed".
And there's no terminology for talking about the human control of those networks.
People use "decentralized network" and assume that you know that they mean human control.
Others think that human control and topology are the same thing.
Imagine if all nostr relays were owned by one corporation. The network topology would still be decentralized!
"Decentralized network control" doesn't cut it because "control" in terms of networks usually means automated.
Network science is a field of study but the language is still pre-scientific 😔

Fancy car - Not worth it. Save the money and get a regular car.

First class air travel - Worth it. But fair warning you can’t go back to economy once you get used to first.

The irony of nostr is that it lack the same addictive qualities of inferior centralized social media services. It really is a better user experience in terms of content and quality by way of curating one’s feed. But the lack of the ‘surprise’ of brain-cycle content makes the drugs of social media less potent.

7. That is a pretty robust setup as far as I can tell from the info provided. Good on you!
The BananaPi R3 is definitely going to be a bottleneck as far as performance goes. I recommend OPNsense installed on a dedicated firewall over just a router with OpenWRT.
OpenWRT uses the Linux kernel, is really more for WiFi and access points, laggs behind OPNsense which uses FreeBSD and is much more powerful.
But I digress, since OPNsense won't fly on a BananaPi R3.

The BananaPi R3 is definitely going to be a bottleneck as far as performance goes. I recommend OPNsense installed on a dedicated firewall over just a router with OpenWRT.
OpenWRT uses the Linux kernel, is really more for WiFi and access points, laggs behind OPNsense which uses FreeBSD and is much more powerful.
But I digress, since OPNsense won't fly on a BananaPi R3.

#Amethyst v0.87.0: Data Vending Machines (DVMs) and Gossip Model
This version adds support for Data Vending Machines for content discovery. You can request a job by simply navigating to the 4th tab and choosing one of the DVMs. It also starts our support for the Inbox/Gossip model. The relay setup screen has been rewritten to support the many types of relays Amethyst will start to use. Please add your relays as you see fit.
Our video caching system has been improved. Most of the high-bandwidth use of the app in the last month has been due to a faulty caching system for some video types. The app was just downloading them at every playback. In a similar way, the caching system for encrypted events has been massively improved. The app should feel visibly lighter at this point.

I used to convert any dataset into a texture and then run a shader ok the GPU to convert the texture into pixels and then take those pixels back to the CPU.
In nostr, I just need to create a texture with all the 1000 events we receive every second and call verify to run them all into the graphics pipeline and get the White (verified) or Black pixels in the at the end.
This is how we did it before CUDA became a thing. It's not a good general purpose procedure, but when you have so many things to run in parallel, it could be worth it.

Nostr isn’t free for some of us until it’s free for all of us. And to do that we need to build a space where people and communities of users can set and enforce community norms for themselves. If we don’t build these tools then we’ll not be able to make Nostr for everybody. Nobody’s saying you need to use moderation labels or relays that take down reported content. Just that for people who want them, they can use them. We need good tools for self management. Authoritarians take and hold power because they claim that they’re the only one to keep people safe. If we don’t build in tools on Nostr to help us keep ourselves safe, then people will think their only option is to use a system with opaque unaccountable centralized control over the platfrom.
