An excellent breakdown of tariffs + monopoly industries and how this could play out.

npub1yxzkm

For all that orthodox economists *hate* tariffs in all their forms, the question, "do tariffs work?" is a complex one, which can't be answered unless you specify *which* tariffs, in *what* context:

Kieran spent a year solo building zap.stream and people complain that YouTube is easier to use - a company with hundreds of engineers and unlimited funding.

The least we can do is support Nostr builders by making an effort.

Wanted to give a shoutout to a tool that doesn’t get much ❤️ here but is one of the most stable and functional Nostr tools. https://relay.tools allows anyone to create their own relay - even non-technical folks. There are multiple configuration options for public and private relays. If you’ve been thinking about setting up your own relay - check it out!

It's not that the Republicans and the Democrats are the same...obviously. But for decades - since Clinton - the Dems have sided with neoliberal economics, just like their Republican counterparts, so the major differences between the two related to overt discrimination, to the exclusion of the economic policies that immiserated working people, with the worst effects landing on racial minorities, women, and gender minorities.

Worth a read from someone who built on Nostr and talked to customers/ end users. There are findings in here that aligned with what I saw as well.

Sharing this directly on Nostr. Let's hope it works this time.

This essay builds on the last one I wrote (As Nostr as Possible), but focuses specifically on some ‘sacred cows’ in the space whose time for slaying may have arrived.

It's not shitting on Nostr (far from it). It's about a different perspective and relationship to the protocol.

I hope this kicks off a few discussions.

This piece speaks to both the power of collective action to bring about innovation and the grift inherent in the current innovation economy. We’ve figured out how to support cutting edge research but then the products resulting from the collective support are privatized - limiting access while enriching a few. It is not enough to simply raise money. https://www.propublica.org/article/zolgensma-sma-novartis-drug-prices-gene-therapy-avexis

This is the one of the best post-election deep dives.

“The problem is that the consultant class has led every politician to believe that if they just have the right formula, they can put in any candidate, churn them through the machine, and people will vote for that candidate. And that’s not true,” she said.

“The Democrats have shown that they don’t have any principles, that they will follow the polls, that if they just talk about the economy and kitchen-table issues in such a way that they don’t actually have to promise anything, then they’ll win next time. But they will lose.”

Nos has a news relay that anyone can subscribe to. We recently added more news outlets to it. You can add the relay to your list: news.nos.social

If anyone has suggestions of other outlets to add let me know if the replies below.

We can spin up a bitcoin news relay pretty easily as well, so if you have ideas for that one include them below.

The apps I’m aware of that make it easy to view relay content are Nos and Damus. You can the Nos version below.

.. but when exactly did we give a few companies the right to define who we are with more authority than we have, right? So a meaningful definition of #privacy needs to start before data. It needs to incorporate a much more fundamental understanding of the right to privacy as the right to define ourselves in our own terms to practice and experiment with the mess making forces of love, intimacy, desire and knowledge making and a right to the unobserved epidemic space in which to do this.

Feels like I’m the only person doing this combination of things where I stream live, then onto RSS feeds but most importantly, self hosting the files. I’m leaving GitHub and forum posts but nothing so far.

Maybe someone can help?

I’m excited to see a conversation starting about the limitations of social media when it comes to social change. For far too long we’ve been duped by dopamine like hits into thinking posts have the power to incite change.

Awareness is not enough.

“What makes this a cultural event isn’t that somebody killed a CEO, but that millions of people refused to respond the way they were supposed to respond.”

The response from insurance companies was more security for CEO’s and from elected officials mostly scolding. How dare people not grieve the loss of the powerful. Note the Chief Justice John Roberts reiterated his concern about the threats to the Supreme Court in his 2025 look ahead instead of acknowledging that credibility has been severely degraded under his leadership.

While this thread mostly discusses physical products I think this is an interesting discussion for #Nostr What graceful failure modes are we building into the apps, the protocol etc? There’s the obvious relay based decentralization at the core of Nostr but what else needs a graceful fail?

npub1vcuwz

When I read about these things I always think about some of the writing of @nprofile1q on graceful failure modes. A product (system) is not defined by its success but by how good or poorly it fails. I've been teaching students that not considering (poor) failure modes is a huge liability.

In all honesty sure tax the rich but the likelihood of that money being used to help people or lift us out of poverty is slim at best.

UK Gov can do some phat weapons deals though and kill a whole bunch of motherfuckers in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

WW1 bankrupted the British Empire and the debt wasn’t repaid for a century, plus all them dead people etc. (much sad, let’s lay a wreath and dress up nice). Economic conditions and the debt burden placed on Germany for reparations lead to the rise of Hitler and WW2. That was fun, wasn’t it?! Just think that once it happened to me that a painting arrived from my art buyer many days late so I apologized for it, I was really sorry for what happened.
However, the buyer was of infinite kindness and responded to me:
“No worries, art is timeless not timely. The painting is beautiful.”

It was one of the nicest compliments received.

My art buyers are one better than the other.

While the world may seem like it is on fire, people often don’t / won’t act until they feel like there are no other options. Revolutions work best when people have nothing left to lose.

Big tech’s hard lean into AI for surveillance and job replacement means many more people have reached a point where something new is possible.

When I talk about the importance of going all in on the Fediverse, I speak based on experience.

At Opera we built a massive user community. When I quit, we had something like 35 million registered users and 35 million monthly visitors.

The new Opera management did not see the value of that. They believed it was cheaper and better to just use Facebook and that investing in your own community was a waste of money. So they closed down MyOpera and built a following on Facebook and Twitter instead. Then they got caught by the bait and switch when Facebook changed and you would no longer reach your audience, without paying. Later on Twitter changed as well.

This is important to explain to companies and institutions as they go shopping for social media sites to invest in. The best investment is clearly in

We’ve released Nos 1.0.2 on TestFlight for all our beta testers and submitted it to Apple for review for our App Store users in Australia and New Zealand. Here’s what we improved in this version:

- Fixed typo in minimum age warning

So much of my job is this over and over again on a loop:

"So what do you think we should do in order to responsibly build the Torment Nexus?"

"You can't. It's a Torment Nexus. Stop it."

"But the Torment Nexus is inevitable!"

"It's not. You could just not do it. You could stop right now."

🙄 This airline can’t even get you from point A to point B without delays and then spends $ to shame its customers. I already avoid them but this is even more incentive. https://apple.news/A9k9E6tw2To2CRE-OGKvgEg

I used to think these were fairy tale only, but they do in fact exist in the wild.

And no I did not pick them or even touch them.

I unfortunately got sick, but not before I discovered some of the amazing things about Riga:
1. The public transit system is 💯! You never need to wait long. It’s clean. You can scan your card in multiple places so all the doors open and close!
2. The National Library is amazing! 5 floors of donated books plus incredible architecture and fascinating exhibits on the history of books, printing etc. Definitely worth a visit!
3. The food! I’ve mostly eaten vegetarian and it’s actually vegetables and not weird processed soy products!
3a. Everyone should adopt their style of cream cheese.
3b. Dark rye bread is the only rye.
3c. The carrot salad which looks like spiralized carrots is 😋!
3d. There is kombucha everywhere and it is very good!

Nostriga Workshop Proposal!

Sometimes you build something and no one is using it. Often people chalk it up to marketing issues and call it a day, and sometimes it is a variation of a marketing issue, but often it comes down to one of three things:
- The thing you built solves a problem that people aren’t that interested in solving
- The thing you built solves a problem, but you haven’t quite found the audience it solves it for
- The thing you built solves part of the problem, but needs some tweaks to see real adoption.

You can understand which sector your product is in by talking to users, however asking them directly will often not get you honest answers.

I’ve proposed a 90 min hands-on workshop at @Nostriga on how to ask the right questions when everyone is

How did I, as a Canadian know he was like this but you did not? Maybe you only see what you wanted to? How many fundraisers has he started speaking and then totally gone off and had to be rescued? Many. Also, he has been telling crazy stories about his life at them that did not happen (like once he said he grew up on a Kibbutz). #uspol

Thanks @Shaun for pulling together a great panel on decentralization via Nostr in NYC! Great to hear about @Wavlake ‘s efforts to rewire the music experience and @YakiHonne ‘s commitment to decentralization. @boston wine for reminding us all that Nostr is genuinely a nice place to hang out. 🎉

The desperation of tech companies to make shopping social is so bizarre. What problem is being solved here?

npub16l3mg

#DoorDash just started making everyone's accounts

*******and purchases public by default******

Opt out, not in. Likely because they company is run by sociopaths.

You might want to shut this off in your profile. If you know anyone who works in management at DoorDash, consider tossing them into your nearest black hole. #privacy

Kathe Kollwitz show is up at MOMA and it’s definitely worth a visit. She was one of the first women artists to succeed visually while also putting forward a woman’s point of view.

Also one of the few sculpters who can render emotion well in 3D.

Earlier this month @nos released in app NIP05 creation. If you dont have one definitely check it out!

During the development we had a long debate about the display of NIP05’s in app. Presently Nostr defaults to making them appear like email addresses with [name] @ [domain].

This presents challenges in the UX of how people interact with these handles.
- some apps send people to the website host of the nip
- some apps treat the nip as an email address
- what happens when there’s actually an email address vs a NIP05
- nostr already supports an @ ux pattern for Npubs and by extension n profile which renders as @ display name

Is there a reason NIP05’s dont follow the same @ pattern? I’m curious what problem are we solving for users of Nostr with the current format?

In many of the “what should Nostr do next” threads over the past few weeks some users have noted search isnt great across Nostr.

This morning our team looked up the relays that support NIP50 - the search NIP and there are some but very few of the major ones folks connect to support search.

We have built our relays on strfry which prioritizes speedy return of npubs rather than indexing.

Curious if folks are relying on something other than NIP50 for search?

Also curious what is or is not motivating implementation of NIP50 amongst relay managers?
