Today I'll be giving a demo on how to turn a basic, fresh slate Debian machine into a fully fledged DATUM box you can use for lotto mining or pooled mining on OCEAN.
You'll be amazed at how easy it is.
1pm, wherever the workshops are.

Pool-mining normally requires the pool to create the block templates using their node, which are sent out to the miners on the pool to hash. Any block found is then sent to the pool and broadcast out to the network using their node. The template they send to the miners does not include any kind of reward split, because ALL of the rewards goes to the pool, and they internally credit sats to each miner's account, after taking their fee.
DATUM changed this whole dynamic. Miners on @OCEAN that are using DATUM are not getting a block template from the pool at all. They are connecting their miners to their own Bitcoin full-nodes to get block templates to hash, and if their miner finds a block, their own node will broadcast

Blocks are tiny and propagate really fast. We....kind of fought a war about maintaining that. Remember?
Really don't appreciate you asserting that I'm trying to be disingenuous or evasive here, you genuinely don't seem to have a firm grasp of where the bottlenecks actually lie.
You're imagining that it's better for a miner to tell a pool about a block and leverage their supposed superior connectivity rather than tell the network about it directly.
Amazingly, adding a middle man only slows things down.

First, let's talk about what it is pools actually do, starting from the theoretical going all the way the practical.
In theory they make no difference to anything - they simply reduce variance.
Instead of earning $.X per year, you earn $.X/365 per day.
This is far more consistent and makes day to day operations easier and it's clear why someone would want to do this - assuming they're a smaller miner who is not capable of finding block frequently enough without pooling and splitting rewards with others.
This might be desirable to the point where you'd even pay a split to the coordinator (pool) because it's that valuable of a service.

Thabkfully, no one here is pretending it's all valid use of Nostr and thus inciting us to inaction.
However, Bitcoin is the most important protocol of our lives in many ways and the gas lightning around the spam it suffers has been sadly very effective.
Very few take it seriously or imagine fee markets for block space are somehow sufficient when they clearly aren't.

Anyone wanna pretend this is all "valid use of the protocol" and not abuse or we only do that with spam on Bitcoin?

Of you could use Nostr and pay no attention.
It's a lot more funny when they try to ban decentralized protocols than centralized platforms.
Genuinely I think we'd all just laugh if they announced a Nostr ban.

I'll give you the back story...
Once upon a time Bitmain was grinding merkle roots instead of nonces aka "covert ASICBOOST".
This gave them an advantage over other miners who didn't know this was possible. One company went out of business - KNC - citing "the Chinese having some secret advantage we don't know about" - which turned out to be true precisely for this reason.
It's one of the reasons ASIC manufacture is so centralized today and this is correctly identified by many as being one of the most vulnerable aspects of the entire bitcoin ecosystem.
The ASICBOOST issue came to a head when Bitmain used their influence to block the activation of SEGWIT (essential for Lightning) because it would break their ability to do it - at least

547,000 sats to move 2730 sats.
Why?
Because this has nothing to do with Bitcoin and doesn't make any sense from the network's perspective.
People who take comfort that behaviour will remain predictable thanks to economically rational decision making need to know it goes both ways when you start taking in external factors.
You have to do it with miners too.
If a miner can make more money in ways that have nothing to do with bitcoin then you can no longer rely on simple assumptions like "miners will do X because if they don't then they will make less than a miner who does"
The simple example I've used many times is compliance.
If you have a choice between expensive legal battles and exclusion informed by government

This cannot be found in Canada or the US. These countries are on suicide missions and it's horrible to live in such an environment.
