Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if he had his own limo blown up to establish the pretense to abandon any ceasefire planned for Ukraine. He'll claim it was Ukrainian terrorists who are responsible, and use that to justify escalating the conflict in Ukraine.

There's 4 equal and opposite possibilities and a 5th thing
Russia hit themselves
* for propaganda
- to play victim
- incite fear / troops morale (reason to fight)
* to kill one of their own
- maybe a mole / someone who was bad at their job / following orders
- disgruntled citizen
____
Or
____
Ukraine hit them
* for propaganda
- to incite fear (maybe suggest a mole)
- morale for troops
* to kill one of the opposition
- the fsb is just like if the FBI and CIA had a baby >> so it's a legitimate target (especially after the idea of smersh was brought back)
- anyone close to Putin or Putin himself
____
*Total accident
- complete coincidence

Totally fair assessment. Although I will say I doubt that Ukraine would have done such a thing at this particular moment. They desperately need that ceasefire, and an antagonistic strike on Russia's dictator in Moscow would be sure way to ensure that ceasefire never happens.
I'm also not sure that Ukraine has the ability to strike so deep into Russia. Obviously, it could physically be done by small team, but the intelligence needed to effectively plan such a thing is likely out of their reach. Still a possibility to be sure, but IMO its on the bottom part of the list of possibilities.

They can strike that far into Russia, and they have. It could come down to the fact that they know they're not getting a ceasefire, and are not intending to suspend operations and allow Russia to keep their operations ongoing - especially with just the teasing of a month long ceasefire deal that will probably not be fully honored, or have vague phrasing allowing for loopholes.
