You have to enable the defenses in the /etc/tor/torrc where you define your hs, but yeah. RetoSwap seed nodes were under attack last year but as soon as PoW was put in the attack totally stopped. Attacking a single onion service with proof of work enabled is an expensive endeavor. Attacking nine separate hidden services all with proof of work enabled was impossible to maintain apparently.
