Tonight I helped a guy a few miles from me take down a tree that was awkwardly leaning over his house.

Used some ropes to pull the top and counteract the lean. Ended up using his jeep to get enough oomf but it fell right along the path of the wedge cut and where we intended to drop it.

Next time I’d start with a pulley system for mechanical advantage (photo for illustration but maybe not the wisest setup haha)

There’s a really slick setup you can get at an arborist supply called a fiddle block. It combines the pulleys you’ve pictured in a pre-strung unit, allows you to move the entire pulley assembly to a comfortable pulling height, and allows the person doing the pulling to stand at 90° to the direction of fall, placing them out of the line of fire for the top and any material that carries in that direction once the tree hits the ground. It’s amazing the amount of force you can exert. Our crews use them a lot at work. The only down side is they are pretty pricey. But if you find yourself doing more of these jobs, it’s a great piece of kit.

Last year, I took down a tree with a shotgun because it was broken really badly from a storm and we could only get a chainfall and chains on part of it and I didn't want to be anywhere near it to cut it.
😅

It was expensive... But it's safer.
